Obidos and Fatima
Obidos, Portugal
Imagine a medival town that was originally established in the 8th century. Add a wall around the town to protect the villagers, wonderful people and all the character you could ask for and you've got Obidos. My goodness, we fell in love with this town! Enjoy the photos and be sure and turn your volume up for the video. (By the way, in the video you'll hear us refer to the "castle walls". Actually, this is the wall that encircles the town. There is no castle in Obidos).
As gorgeous as the town was, the most extraordinary character of Obidos was the wall. It's the first thing you see when you come into the town and it was the first thing we tackled. The views were amazing and the experience of walking the wall will be something we will remember forever.
Fatima
One of the places in Portugal that I had researched was Fatima. However, it wasn't going to fit into our itinerary. But with the help of Mother Nature and her rain, we had a day that was scheduled for golf and now we could do Fatima.
Wikipedia says:
"Fátima is a central Portuguese town that's home to the Sanctuary of Fátima, a Catholic pilgrimage site. The Capelinha das Aparições marks the spot where the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared in 1917."
Pretty much, if you're Catholic, this is one of the sights that will overpower you. And even if you're not Catholic, you'll still say "wow".
Sonja and I attended mass and I could feel the emotion as she knelt in the pews. This was a moment that I'll cherish.
We'll finish off the blog tomorrow with our visit to the town of Sintra.
